I'm experimenting and I thought that KNOS could only read the HDD of my pc. Looking at the properties from a file on my HDD the KNOS owner can read and write. I thought this as well with my ubuntu live cd, but, I was able to delete a file from my HDD and I believe KNOS would have let me as well since KNOS wouldn't let me trash it but asked if I wanted to immediately delete the file. Is my interpretation wrong with this? Couldn't something write to the HDD? I did try to copy and paste a file on the HDD and I received an error message.

The R/W permissions are granted to the top folder so as to permit writing to USB as KNOS user only, but we protect the hard disk from being written to under *any* circumstances from dropping a file or deleting. You'll get an error when you attempt to do so. A version of KNOS *can* be built which would allow write/delete permission for example on a special version for antivirus/cleaning usage if a customer wanted that, but our standard version for protected use will not permit writes or deletes to the hard disk.

Wow Kevin, that was quick. I gave it a spin and just as you said, when I tried to delete the file, KNOS through an error saying the operation wasn't supported. AWESOME. I was surprised when my Live Ubuntu CD deleted the file. Another great feature of KNOS. Lovin it!

I was surprised when my Live Ubuntu CD deleted the file. Another great feature of KNOS. Lovin it! Glad you like! KNOS is actually a toolkit which can generate disks for a specific set of purposes and configurations. What you're running here is merely one of the many possibilities. Given that there is a need for a thoroughly secure means of accessing the internet and being able to go anywhere, do anything with complete safety, we thought this one would be a useful demonstration of that degree of safety. One of my favorite things is going and visiting sites that "may harm your computer." What can possibly happen with KNOS? Browser crash at the absolute worst. Were we to do a custom build of this OS with an antivirus, we would of course need to make it possible to write and delete files on a Windows disk, and we can easily allow that in a custom build. We chose to permit writing to a USB stick on this particular build in case there was a need to copy off diagnostics to another machine to contact us if networking somehow failed. We can even build KNOS so that writes to memory cannot be done either. All comes down to what a customer might want from our thoroughly flexible and customizable design. Our primary intent though is to keep people safe and provide an operating system that doesn't require a personal geek to hold your hand and raid your fridge. Heh.
