In addition, we will open a new board for discussing this release.
WHAT'S NEW IN KNOS BETA 2
1. Skype support added, USB-only webcam support has been added and is questionable and in need of testing. Skype works well now though the video features might not if your webcam isn't detected.
2. USB Image scanner support. Most USB-based multiuse printer/scanner/fax are now supported, we need to know which ones aren't. Scanning option added to Graphics applications menu. Scanned PNM files can be saved to desktop and then manipulated with GIMP or Inkscape.
3. Audio improvements in core kernel code - additional amplification to provide louder sound. Additional sound cards detected and supported.
4. Additional wifi cards supported including Intel, Belkin and some more Broadcom-based wifi cards and internal motherboard wifi devices. Some Broadcom devices unfortunately not supported owing to patent issues with Broadcom and certain vendors (Dell, Apple and Lenovo) which could not be resolved by release time.
5. Additional printers and combination printer/fax/scanner supported.
6. Numerous "device hints" added to the hardware detection algorithms to better detect hardware that wasn't detected properly in the original beta 1.
Please note that we had intended to upgrade this release to the new BSD 8.1 version which included a new Gnome 2.30 release and other new core code. We have determined that the Gnome 2.30 release is unsatisfactory and contains too many bugs to meet KNOS reliability requirements. Because the BSD 8.1 release requires the use of Gnome 2.30 and no longer supports the Gnome 2.28 properly, we've been forced to improve the same BSD "stable kernel" that the first KNOS beta was built on as well as add new code we've written as enhancements instead of using the latest official releases in order to ensure the continuing reliability of our product.
Numerous minor enhancements that we had intended to provide in this second release therefore must be postponed until our next release at which time we hope that these bugs have been resolved to meet KNOS quality standards. This unfortunately affects additional Broadcom wifi cards which are supported in BSD 8.1 but not in KNOS at this time, and other Broadcom cards which remain unsupported even in the new BSD 8.1. Therefore, we've modified our existing prior kernel with enhancements of our own as well as to Gnome 2.28 instead of using the newer releases. Some promises made earlier to include hardware which was not detected in our original beta release may still not be handled BY KNOS as a result of this. Our apologies.
