I have been trying to send you the KNOS3 diags for the laptop and the desktop, but the Applications > System Tools > KNOS-diagnostics button doesn't do anything now. Do you no longer want diags? or is it something on this end?

Do you no longer want diags? or is it something on this end? It should ... if somehow, that report didn't appear on the desktop a second or so after you clicked it, then try this ... hit Ctrl+R keys together and that should refresh the desktop and make it appear. Given THIS, I'd like to see those diagnostics actually. Email me at support at knosproject.com and I'll be happy to look them over - there might be an issue after all.

desktop diags is on its way too.
Thus far, KNOS3 is much slower on the desktop than on the laptop which has much less horsepower and is just the opposite of the way it was with KNOS1 and 2. First boot it just locked up after a few minutes - including the Flash Reset button - and had to do the hard-off routine. Second boot - it just didn't, last line was something like "rebooting now" , I didn't see it in time as it was taking so long I was going in and out of the room This is the third boot, and so far so good, though it is definitely slower than the laptop. Strange.

Strange. Hiya ... you might want to download the 64 bit version of KNOS for that desktop. I note that it's all NVidia chipset through and through along with that AMD dual core 64 in there. I suspect that it will work a WHOLE lot better in 64 bit native KNOS than chugging along in 32 bit mode, switching in and out of 64.

Got the 64bit up and running on the desktop. It's acting the same way as the 32bit : - every click of the mouse, or attempt to scroll, is followed by the wrist watch appearing on screen, from several to many to mannnnnnyyyyyyy seconds of waiting for the desired action to occur. (also a grey screen during boot)
The peculiar (at least to me) thing is that I don't recall any of this with KNOS1 and 2. Why now?

Still looking into your diagnostics and will post another message in here once I'm back on yours. We ended up having a few mysteries to track down on the "make-usb" issue and a few other new things out of the BSD folks for me to try out. The desktop (if I recall properly) has the MCP55 NVidia chipset and that's been providing a few headaches. BSD folks are still on that and supposedly have a few things to try but haven't heard back from them yet. The gray change on the kickup is due to our adding a new 3D graphics renderer (you'll notice that the desktop now has shadows under the boxes and some of the themes now have some lovely transparent effects to them. In fact, your symptom might be an issue with the rendering engine possibly. NVidia just released a bunch of new drivers, but they require the new Xorg engine ... that's something else we're working on behind the scenes here for the next build. Will be back on this once I get a few more answers since there are conflicting ideas as to the cause there. Who made that machine again?

The desktop is a generic hodgepodge:
-Manufacturer: ASUSTek Computer INC. -Model: M2N-E -Version: 1.XX -North Bridge: NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI Revision A1 -South Bridge: NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI Revision A1 -CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+ -Cpu Socket: Socket AM2 (940) -System Slots: 7 PCI -Memory: 4096 MBytes

There was puzzlement among the BSD folks as to why there was a problem with that since the MCP55 chipset from NVidia is supposed to be supported in "8.1 current" ... apparently there's more ACPI issues and somehow the chipset is not being properly "exposed" on that motherboard. I'll forward this along and see if it helps them to figure out how to cattleprod it properly. Heh.
